- Prediction of Gravitational Wave
The existence of gravitational wave was predict by Albert Einstein in 1916 base on his general theory of relativity. Similar to electromagnetic wave which is disturbance of electric field and megnetic field caused by acclerated charges, gravitational waves are disturbances of spacetime caused by accelerated masses.
- Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave antenna
To detect the change of space, interferometer is a easy and effective way. However, changes come from gravitational wave is extremely small and makes it challenging to detect such small change in length. In 2015, LIGO project (http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/) in America finally overcome most of the problems and succeed to make the first observation of gravitational wave. Nowaday, there are several detector projrcts around worldwide. LIGO in America has constructed two 4km interferometer in Washington state and Louisiana state, they are planning LIGO-India in the future too. VIRGO (http://www.ego-gw.it/), joined by Italy and France researchers, has built a 3km interferometer in Italy. KAGRA (https://gwcenter.icrr.u-tokyo.ac.jp/) , the first gravitational wave antenna constructed in Asia, is a 3km interferometer in Japan Kamioka. Our team are now a member in both KAGRA and LIGO, we join the calibration team in KAGRA and Optics-coating team and calibration team in LIGO.
